Bitcoin address formats and casino withdrawals: a short field guide
The first time a casino cashier rejected my withdrawal address, I assumed the site was broken. It was not. The address started with "bc1p", and that particular cashier only accepted older formats. Nothing was lost, but it took a support chat and a second wallet to sort out, and it taught me to check address support before playing rather than after.
Bitcoin has a few address types in everyday use. Legacy addresses start with a 1. Wrapped SegWit addresses start with a 3. Native SegWit addresses start with "bc1q", and Taproot addresses start with "bc1p". Most modern wallets default to one of the bc1 formats because they are cheaper to spend from. Most casinos accept the first three without trouble. Taproot support is common now but still not universal, especially on cashiers built a few years ago.
The good news is that a properly built cashier will refuse an address it cannot handle instead of sending coins into the void. The bad news is that not every cashier is properly built, and some only check that the string looks roughly like a bitcoin address. That is why I do a small test withdrawal to any new address before moving a larger amount.
If your wallet supports more than one format, it is worth generating a native SegWit receive address just for casino withdrawals. It is widely accepted, fees to spend from it later are low, and you avoid the Taproot question entirely. Hardware wallets and most desktop wallets let you pick the format in the receive screen.
Deposits work the other way round. The casino gives you an address, and your wallet needs to be able to send to it. Any reasonably current wallet can send to every format above, so problems here are rare. The thing to watch on deposits is the network: some cashiers also list "BTC" on other chains as a wrapped token, and sending real bitcoin to one of those addresses is a mistake that support may not be able to undo.
Two last habits. Copy addresses with the copy button, never by hand, and check the first and last few characters after pasting, because clipboard malware that swaps addresses is real. And keep a note of which address you gave each casino, so a withdrawal that arrives later is easy to match.
When I compare bitcoin casinos, cashier quality is one of the first things I look at, ahead of the bonus. If you want to see how different sites handle withdrawals, address types and confirmation times, a longer breakdown covers the main options and is a reasonable place to start your own shortlist.
